Overview

A nephrologist specialises in diagnosing and treating problems with kidneys, high blood pressure, fluid retention and electrolyte imbalance.

Nephrology centres around the diagnosis of kidney disease and its treatment (medication, dialysis) and the follow-up of renal transplant patients. Additionally, most nephrologists are experts in the care of electrolyte disorders and hypertension. As most renal conditions are chronic, nephrologists often treat their patients over many years.
