What is concussion?

Concussion is a mild form of head injury that can affect how your brain functions for a short period of time. A concussion is caused by a hit to the head, or another part of the body that results in a forceful head movement. You can get a concussion even if you have not been knocked unconscious.

Symptoms of concussion

  • Difficulty concentrating and remembering
  • Dizziness and balance issues
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting (often due to dizziness)
  • Thinking feels slow and foggy
  • Sensitivity to noise and light
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Unexplained mood changes such as irritability, anxiety and/or depression.
  • Visual symptoms (blurred vision, eye strain).

About the Concussion Clinic

At your appointment, you will be assessed by a rehabilitation doctor. At Epworth Hawthorn the concussion clinic is run by Professor John Olver and Dr Rose Acher. At Epworth Geelong the clinic is run by Dr Daniela Micheletto.The rehabilitation doctors are supported by a team of senior neuropsychologists, physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, speech pathologists and occupational therapists who provide support, education and intervention to support a successful and safe return to work, study and sport.
